cartonería (paper sculptures) and ceramics
This page features my alebrijes and animal sculptures. Alebrije sculptures were first made by Pedro Linares in Oaxaca, Mexico and his extended family continues the tradition to this day. The medium of alebrijes is cartonería, a process commonly known as papier-mâché, which consists of building a mold and layering paper strips covered in flour paste. The materials I use create a strong surface that can be as hard as stone. After designing and building alebrijes, I sand and then paint them with metallic acrylic paints and shimmery inks. In addition to alebrijes, I also make other animal cartonería sculptures with found objects and animal sculptures in clay and other media.
